Survival running is a unique concept that intrigued me.  I met with Josue for a trial run along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and fortunately I became more and more impressed as the session progressed.  Wearing Vibram Treks and a small handheld of water,  we started out with a small warm up, but within minutes I was scaling rocks and jumping into the very cold water of the creek.  Using all available natural features of the large rocks along the Greenbelt and the numerous trees, we bounded off small boulders, climbed grapevines like ropes, and trees like monkeys. At one point, Josue jumped off one of the smaller cliffs directly into the creek and swam across.  Somewhat apprehensively, I followed, as I am a little scared of heights.  As we approached obstacles in our path, we vaulted over them or moved under them.  We instantly moved from a bi-pedal mode into all fours to negotiate terrain as the terrain dictated . By the end of the workout, I was thoroughly spent.  With minimal water and nutrition and the high heat rate interval we moved at, I really felt like, “Hey, this feels like survival training!”  What was even more impressive, and why I would recommend someone give this type of training a shot, is the guiding hand of encouragement Josue provided.  He understood what the natural tendencies for movement are of an untrained survival runner and spent a detailed amount of time coaching the finer points. Coaching finer points, not only of how to actually move, but how to think about how to move really solidified my confidence in Josue’s coaching approach.

…I believe that guy can train anybody to anything…

I had a taster and it was very very cool indeed.

Each session of Josue’s speed and agility class is different, challenging and fun. It’s evident that he puts a great deal of planning into each session. During this class, I’ve learned that if you want to get faster, youhave to change the way you think about/tackle the various types of terrain you encounter. Josue is a knowledgeable and thoughtful coach. I’d recommend his classes to anyone seeking to improve their running and build confidence.
